About me

Many things have come and gone in my life, but one thing has always been present - a deep curiosity towards my body and what I can do with it. This interest in learning and exploration shapes everything I do. It’s the reason I can spend hours outside, moving my body and then happily spend hours more sharing what I’ve learned with friends and students.

Growing up, I was the youngest of three. I was always following my brother and sister around. I never decided which games we played. I was just happy to be included. It felt like someone was always telling me what to do. If not my siblings then my parents and teachers. Recess and lunchtimes in the schoolyard were the few times in the day when I could be independent.

As I grew into my adolescence, I gradually realised the way things had been was no longer enough for me. I had felt like a passenger - like I wasn’t in control of my own life. I’d spent enough time waiting for others to tell me what to do. I wanted to be the guy who made things happen, not the guy following along, living in someone else’s story.

Age 15 was the beginning of a perspective shift. I started to discover my relationship with my body through sport and physical training. Whether I progressed or not was all up to me. I was the one who had to show up and take control. Nobody else could do my training. Nobody else was in charge of what I ate, or how well I slept, or whether I drank enough water. It was all me. It always had been, but I knew it now.

Stepping into the driver’s seat of my own vehicle felt like a super-power. I got to decide. I could craft myself and my life in a direction of my own choosing. I was rewarded with a confidence-boosting physical evolution - living proof that I was in control. This fuelled my interest in the process of learning and evolving, because the journey was my own. The physical results mattered, but at its core, this process was an exploration of what my body could do.

Luckily, I had some great mentors early on. When I asked questions, they encouraged and guided me, instilling a positive feedback loop and a trust in the process ahead. I let my genuine interest guide me, actively seeking out teachers who walked the talk. I’ve been able to find some world-class mentors who have supported me during my stints of short-term specialisation in various disciplines from bodybuilding to powerlifting, ultra-endurance running, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and range of motion training.

I fell in love with being a student, fascinated by the journey of learning by experience. Beneath every milestone achievement there is a process; a journey; a relationship. It isn’t the end result but the process of practice that matters most to me, because this process is what changed my life. Somewhere out there, there’s a 15 year old training alone in his garage with rusty weights. And somewhere else, there’s a 30 year old woman dreaming of doing the splits. I want to tell them “It’s on you. You’ve got the power. Nobody else is driving.” And I want to offer them a roadmap in the same way my teachers did for me.

After ten years of teaching and a few more practicing, I still have so many questions and so much to explore. There is no place I’d rather do this than with my community, amongst the calming, clarifying beauty of nature. I’m the same curious kid who explored nature on his lunch breaks… just a little bigger now. Getting outside and learning to interact with the world through my practice has made be a better partner, uncle, son, brother and friend. This is what matters most to me. Human first, student second and teacher third.
